Heating in this part of North Carolina is mostly heat pumps with electric backup, plus gas furnaces in older houses and boilers in a few of the historic downtown properties. The failures follow the mild-climate pattern: equipment that sits idle for nine months and then gets asked to run hard for a week in January, defrost boards that quit, reversing valves that stick, strip heat that trips on a limit, and flame sensors coated after two seasons of light use.

The calls we get are predictable too. The house will not climb past sixty on the first genuinely cold morning, the auxiliary heat runs constantly and the power bill shows it, the unit is icing over and never clearing, or there is a burning smell the first time the heat comes on for the season. All of those are diagnosable in one visit.
